Play Checkers Online — Free, No Signup
Checkers Arena is a free way to play the classic game of checkers (also known as draughts) right in your browser. There is nothing to install and nothing to pay: open the board, pick a mode, and make your first move.
Play against the computer on three difficulty levels, invite a friend with a private link, pick an opponent from the live lobby, or build a friends list and challenge your favorite rivals directly. Every online game is played on a fair-play server that checks each move against the official rules — and every online game counts toward your own Elo rating. You can play everything as a guest; a free optional account (no email required) keeps your rating across devices and puts you on the leaderboard.
🤖 Play vs the Computer
Sharpen your skills against our built-in checkers AI. Choose Easy if you are learning to play checkers, Medium for a balanced fight, or Hard to face an engine that plans up to ten moves ahead. Great for practicing forced captures and multi-jumps. More on playing checkers against the computer — including how far each level looks ahead and how often it holds back.
🌍 Challenge a Friend Anywhere
Click Invite a Friend and you get a private game link. Send it over any chat app — when your friend opens it, you are instantly at the same board, even if you are on different continents. If a connection drops, the game waits and lets the player rejoin.
⚔️ Open Challenges Lobby
Find Opponent opens the live lobby: a list of real players waiting for a game, each with their name and rating. Join one with a single click, or post your own challenge and let someone come to you — it stays listed for 24 hours, even after you close the page, and we'll notify you the moment someone accepts.
👥 Friends List
Add friends by searching their username — or tap the + next to your opponent's name right at the board. You'll see who is online, and one click on Challenge sends them an instant popup invitation. Perfect for ongoing rivalries with players you enjoyed facing.
🏆 Elo Ratings & Leaderboard
Every online game is rated with the same Elo system chess uses. You start at 1200 — beat stronger opponents to climb faster. Guests keep their rating in the browser; a free account keeps it on every device, tracks your wins, losses and draws, and can put you in the public Top 25 leaderboard.
🛡️ Fair Play, Clocks & Draws
The server validates every single move, so cheating is impossible. A two-minute-per-move clock keeps games flowing, you can offer a draw or resign honorably, drawn positions are detected automatically, and after the last move a rematch is one click away.
Ratings, Accounts and the Leaderboard
Checkers Arena uses a hybrid identity model inspired by the big chess sites: you can play every single mode without registering. As a guest you still get a name and an Elo rating — it simply lives in your browser. Creating an account is optional, free, and takes ten seconds: pick a username and a password, no email needed. Your existing guest rating and game history come with you, work on any device you sign in from, and registered players appear in the Top 25 leaderboard with their full win/loss/draw record. An account also unlocks the friends list, online-status indicators, and direct friend challenges.
Checkers Rules Used on This Site
Checkers Arena follows standard English draughts rules on an 8×8 board with 12 pieces per side: pieces move diagonally on the dark squares, captures are mandatory, and multi-jump chains must be completed. A piece that reaches the far row is crowned a king and may move and capture backwards. You win by capturing every enemy piece — or by leaving your opponent with no legal move.
Online games can also end in a draw, exactly as in over-the-board play: when the same position occurs three times (threefold repetition), when 40 consecutive moves pass without a capture or a man moving forward (the no-progress rule), or when both players simply agree to share the point. Drawn games award half a point to each side in the rating calculation.
That is the short version. The complete checkers rules cover every case in detail, and how to play checkers walks a beginner through a first game move by move. Once the rules feel natural, checkers strategy and the guide to checkers openings are where the game really starts. For the things people argue about at the board — can you jump backwards, do you have to jump — there is a page of checkers questions answered.
And if you would rather train than play a full game, the daily checkers puzzle is one position a day with exactly one winning move. Every puzzle is built so that at least one natural-looking alternative does not just spoil the win — it loses.
Stuck on a position from a game of your own? The checkers solver takes any board you set up and answers with the best move, who stands better and the continuation it expects — and gives that position its own link, so you can send it to whoever you were arguing with about it.
Four Draughts Variants, One Board
American checkers is only the beginning. The variant tabs above the board change the game entirely. Brazilian draughts keeps the same 8×8 board but adds backward captures, flying kings and compulsory maximum capture. International draughts plays those same rules on a 10×10 board with 20 pieces per side. And Turkish draughts turns the whole game 90°: pieces move orthogonally across every square, and kings fly like a rook.
All four are playable against the computer and online against other people, and every result counts toward the same Elo rating. Each variant has its own guide with rules, history and a side-by-side comparison — they are collected in the checkers and draughts guides.
Two of them are also written in their own language: damas brasileiras em português and Türk daması Türkçe.
